Cool Kit, Clever Thinking: Why We Love Testing Samples in the Lab
After the response to our recent Lego man post (yes, we really did test a multi-mirror lens on a plastic figurine), we thought it was worth showing a bit more of what goes on behind the scenes in our lab.
At Fisher Smith, we’ve built our workspace around the idea of rapid experimentation. It’s where we test, tinker, and trial real-world solutions for customer challenges, and where we get to play with some very cool kit in the process.
Take our current rig: the Cognex In-Sight 3800, a powerful embedded AI camera, paired with a microscope lens and mounted on a modular Thorlabs system (basically adult Meccano). Throw in some deep learning tools and a 3D printer, and we’ve got everything we need to create microscope-level inspection setups at speed.
This gives us a serious advantage when it comes to sample testing. It means we can:
-
Quickly assess samples to your specific requirements
-
Combine AI-enabled cameras with precision optics
-
Nail the setup before we even set foot on site
-
Reduce risk and complexity in challenging applications
-
Explore ideas that just aren’t possible with off-the-shelf systems
The result? Accurate, robust measurement and detection, especially in high-precision or tricky-to-handle scenarios. All without the long lead times or high overheads.
We’re always happy to receive sample parts from customers, whether you’re looking to solve a known problem or just want to see what’s possible. Let us build it, test it, and find the best-fit solution before your production line is even touched.
Got something to test? Send it over. Let’s see what our lab can do.
